U15 and U18 Successful Season Report

After poor weather conditions, injury and even a last minute refereeing change because of a lost contact lens, it is my pleasure to announce that the Moffat Academy U15 Football team have won the Regional Small School’s league. A feat that has not been accomplished in over 15 years, the boys endured a long season but consistency and focus was high throughout. Our first game was at home to Sanquhar Academy. A very ‘topsy turvy’ affair, both teams attacked and defended brilliantly and, at times, very poorly! The eventual 10-5 win for Moffat was a reflection of this but at least we had got rid of the rust and were ready for the remaining matches. Next up were Dalbeattie away at their fantastic new school. Moffat were ruthless in their attacking play and ran out 9-1 winners. This set the tone for the next match, a 10-0 win over Max High. The boys had found a great run of form and were determined not to let this slip. However, Winter had arrived and a mixture of heavy rain and snow saw a pause in fixtures until well after Christmas. Perhaps the turning point in the league for Moffat was an incredibly hard-fought victory at Langholm with Peter Mendy clutching a last minute winner to maintain our unbeaten run. Another long fixture break ensued but our final game against Castle Douglas finished 3-2 to Moffat. The boys showed incredible determination to fight back from conceding an early goal. A special mention has to go to Peter Mendy, who scored an incredible 19 goals over the season. His speed, agility and ability to finish from any distance was a great help to the team.

A few days after the exciting news that Moffat Academy’s U15 football team won their league, amazingly, staff at the school were informed that the U18 team had managed the same feat. A nervous wait had seen the league go down to the final day and due to a cancellation of another fixture, Moffat were awarded the title. The team had many ups and downs during the campaign with a bitterly disappointing defeat to Max High proving to be a real test of the team’s resilience.  Tough 3-2 wins against both Castle Douglas and Sanquhar Academy proved to be vital in the season’s success as well as a very impressive win against Dalbeattie High School. Leading the way for the U18 team was Logan Turner, demonstrating his fantastic leadership skills in captaining the side.  Young Upper Annandale ace, Braden Bruce had an excellent season with goalkeeper Robbie Minto guarding the goals. Incredibly, it is understood that Moffat Academy have never won both leagues in the same season. An amazing achievement which may never be repeated, the boys have laid down a marker for future Moffat Academy teams to emulate.

Congratulations to all involved, a remarkable year for the teams and one in which both have done their peers, teachers and community proud. Well done!
