UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
Moffat Academy's S6 Equalities Committee has been hard at work looking at the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. As well as analysing what they think we do well as a school, the students have also come up with some great suggestions to put into action in the coming months. Well done to everyone involved.
Equalities Groups - Ensuring everyone is safe, included and learning.
“Diversity is part of what makes the world beautiful; people from a range of social, cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, who may be heterosexual, lesbian, gay or bisexual, who may be transgender and may or may not have a range of physical, sensory or mental impairment, all contribute to the richness of everyone’s life. We need to celebrate diversity and use it as a rich learning source”.
Equality - Making this happen is underpinned by our schools vision, values and aims.
Equality legislation places the public sector equality duty on all schools requiring them, among other things, to be proactive in promoting equity between diverse groups of people. We should also be mindful of the ‘invisible minority’ potentially present in all schools, and help every member of the school community to have a sense of belonging and participate fully in every aspect of school life.
Last session, Moffat Academy introduced the idea of an Equalities Group to pupils. The response was overwhelmingly positive and as a result we had 75 people wishing to participate, 60 of those were pupils across a variety of year groups. This number has increased recently too, as more pupils have signed up.
As you are aware, the annual stakeholder surveys that were issued to parents , pupils, partners etc were adapted in June to include questions on equality. The results of these questionnaires have been analysed and have formed part of our improvement agenda.
All those who put their names forward for the original Equalities Group were then asked to select a sub group they would like to help develop. Any areas identified as needing an improvement in the stakeholder surveys have been incorporated into the remits of these sub groups.
Over the course of the year, pupils in each of the groups will meet and look to make improvement, implement, and raise awareness of, a variety of things across the school. There will be opportunity for pupil leadership and an increased pupil voice.
The Equalities sub groups include; A stakeholder survey and online communication group, a promotions and accreditation group, a policy group, a personal social education group, an assembly group, and an anti-bullying group. Staff will work within each area to help drive forward changes and support pupils in their work.
This is just the beginning of this journey and something we are committed to for the future.
