SCHOLAR have produced a new 3 minute video, for Parents and Carers aimed, primarily, at parents and carers of learners in S3-S6.
We will be holding 3 information sessions on Monday 11th January for the parents/carers of Secondary pupils via Teams. Each session will last 30 minutes and will begin with an introduction from our new Head Teacher, Mrs T. Woods. The session will also contain details of the plans for Learning and Teaching during this period of lockdown.
The timings of the sessions are: 3.30pm; 4.30pm or 5.30pm.

Moffat Academy - Secondary Digital Learning Support
Please use this form to contact Moffat Academy if you or your child are experiencing any issues with accessing any digital learning - Glow/Show My homework/Teams etc. The form can be used by you - as parent/carer - or a pupil directly. The form can be completed at any point during the current lockdown period and a member will be in touch as soon as possible after submission.
City of Glasgow College Virtual Event 10th August
City of Glasgow College will host a virtual event on Monday 10th August 2020 between 12 and 2pm and/or 4pm and 6pm.
We still have limited availability for some courses beginning August/September 2020 but the event is equally suitable for next year's leavers and guidance staff/parents requiring further information.

The University of Glasgow will be hosting a Virtual Undergraduate Open Day on Tuesday 23rd June, 9-6pm for students interested in applying to any of our undergraduate degree programmes for 2021 entry. All pupils have been emailed a link to search for virtual open days for colleges and universities for session 2021/22. For some, this might be not be a current thought however many of the open days require registration and although is will not be the same as going to the institutions the school would encourage parents and pupils to sign up for relevant events.

Good morning - Part of the secondary daily email.
My plans for this week include a routine of yoga; school work; walking and housework. Also, everyday I write a to-do-list. Making plans, having a routine and writing down the things that you would like to achieve can help you to cope with the lockdown. At the beginning of the week take time to plan, to make a list and see what you can achieve and a the top of your list should be make your bed every day!

I had the joy, once again, of speaking to a number of you during the day yesterday. It is becoming a highlight of my working day. In planning for next week, I am going to set up team meetings for year groups. The team meetings do not allow video chat, audio only for students. The meetings will last a maximum of 15 minutes and the meetings will be discussion based.

Good morning - A copy of the daily message emailed to all secondary pupils.
It is very important that all pupils stay in touch with the school and I would ask that you click the read receipt to allow the school to track your connection with the school. This should be daily!
I have spoken to a number of pupils this week, by email, by phone and by team meeting. The reaction has been varied but, for me, it has been a joy to hear, and speak with a number of you. I am hoping to set up team meetings with year groups, starting next week, depending on the technology and permissions. Look out for the request to join a meeting!

She spent nine years working at New Scientist magazine as news editor, features editor and reporter, and remains a consultant to the magazine. Linda has received numerous awards for her journalism, including the Association of British Science Writers’ award for Best Investigative Journalism. Her most recent book “Chasing the Sun: The New Science of Sunlight and How it Shapes Our Bodies and Minds” explores the significance of sunlight, from ancient solstice celebrations to modern sleep labs, and the impact on public health of light-polluted cities and excessive exposure to bright lights from devices. This talk will focus on how public health can address exposure to light as an intervention to improve population health and wellbeing.

These regular events will focus on 3 key areas - children, young people and parents; businesses; and, community support. For each event we will be focusing on a topic that you have told us matters to you, or where there is a high level of interest.

The first Children, Young People and Parents event will focus on Qualifications, and it will be available online from 4pm on Wednesday 29 April. We recognise young people and parents, especially those who were due to sit exams, may have lots of questions about qualifications and next steps given the changes this year. For this event we will have DGC Education staff along with Skills Development Scotland colleagues answering your questions.

An important update from SQA
*Live Q&A 13.00 Thursday*
Earlier this week, SQA shared further details on the awarding and delivery of results for 2020. This includes more information for schools and colleges on the process of providing estimated grades for cancelled exams.
SQA is in regular discussion with UCAS and universities to help students progress on to the next stage of their education or employment, and are working to ensure students receive their results by 4 August.
Like other recent announcements, we want to reassure you that universities and colleges are expected to treat your students’ applications fairly and consistently, and to consider these grades in the same way as any other qualifications. We also plan to run Confirmation and Clearing processes broadly similar to previous years.

Reminder to all secondary pupils. There is a expectation that all secondary pupils check into their GLOW accounts for updates and information from different agencies.

I hope that everyone is keeping well and enjoying the sunshine safely. I had the joy of speaking to a number of senior pupils yesterday, by phone. It was lovely to have a catch up. It got me thinking that perhaps if you have not already done so it might be an idea to send a message, or make a call to someone that perhaps you have not spoken with in a while!

Help with SAAS Applications
The Funding Awareness Team were scheduled to attend many schools across the country in the coming months which obviously cannot now go ahead so we are currently working on a toolkit of support available and scheduling online sessions on our Social Media channels which will be shared with you in the coming weeks.

The Online Application service is now open and our General Enquiry Unit are dealing with email and voicemail correspondence on a daily basis. Your pupils can get in touch via the ‘Contact Us’ option in their online account if they have any specific queries.
Friday - last day of term!
Good morning all
It has been a strange term. A typical term 3 would include S1 pupils enjoying their classes, knowing their teachers and having a secondary school routine, full of rich learning; S2 pupils would be working on the subjects that "they like" and they have chosen; S3 would have sat S3 exams and made their choices for S4; S4-S6 would have sat their prelims, realised that they still had a bit of work to do and started to up the pace of their work and learning. It is easy to get caught up in the past 2 weeks, but I think it is good to remember that for the most of term 3 it has been business as usual.
There has been an update from SQA re Certification for 2020. It does not answer all the questions but I do know that the school and the teachers will work with the SQA to try to ensure that all pupils are fairly accredited for all the hard work that has been put in over the past 9 months, and previous years. Each week the school will publish home learning overview sheets. This is a copy of the work/tasks for the week that have been emailed to all pupils. The tasks have been split by subjects and class teachers. Pupils should complete all the work/tasks, work/tasks can be completed in any order, and submitted to the teachers as instructed on SMHW and/or teams.

Emailed to all S4-S6 pupils - SQA statement on coursework for National Courses

Following the announcement by the First Minister on Sunday, that no young person with SQA coursework to complete should attend school to do so, we continue to work hard on how we should take coursework evidence into account, in determining young people’s final grades.
Everyone here at SQA will do their utmost, given the current situation, and with the support of the education system, to ensure that learners’ hard work is rightly and fairly recognised and allows them to proceed to further learning or work.
The current public health advice has meant that we have had to make some really difficult decisions about coursework. This means that for this year, schools and colleges are not required to submit learner coursework for marking, in Higher and Advanced Higher courses.
We have taken this difficult decision to be as fair as possible to all Higher and Advanced Higher candidates, whilst taking on board the current public health advice, the many varied coursework requirements across different subjects, and how these are managed in schools and colleges across the country.
I appreciate that some learners may have already completed their coursework for Higher and Advanced Higher courses. This work can still be used as part of the suite of evidence for teachers and lecturers to draw on as they consider estimated grades.
We have received coursework for a range of National 5 subjects and have contacted National 5 coursework markers to confirm marking arrangements. All National 5 coursework, due to be uplifted in April and May, will not be submitted for marking.
We will provide further details on the estimation of grades, that we will need from teachers and lecturers to inform certification, and fuller details of our approach to certification, as soon as possible.
This is an unprecedented situation for us all, and circumstances are rapidly changing. With every change in circumstances, we continue to consider how best to recognise learner achievement in as fair a way as possible.

Update from UCAS - This message has been emailed to all S5 & S6 pupils.
Following the recent government announcements of the closure of schools and the cancellation of examinations and assessments in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, we want to reassure you that all organisations involved in the higher education admissions process are working flat out to find a solution that’s efficient, fair, and in your best interests.
We appreciate this is a difficult and uncertain situation for applicants planning to start university in the autumn, and we are committed to work together to ensure that your hard work to date will not go to waste, and that no-one is unfairly impacted in this process by the COVID-19 virus.
A message from the Universities Minister, Michelle Donelan:
'We want to assure students that grades will be equally as valid as those in previous years, and their hard work will be rewarded and fairly recognised. There is no reason for the usual admissions cycle to be disrupted.
'I am pleased Universities UK has confirmed institutions will be flexible and do all they can to support students to progress to higher education.'
Information for students in Scotland
The SQA has been asked by the Deputy First Minister to develop an alternative certification model.
To make sure it’s a fair reflection of your performance¸ the government has said your grade will be based on information from your teachers’ judgement, using:
any units and coursework that are completed, and estimated grades provided by teachers, drawing on the available evidence gathered throughout the year prior attainment information, where available.
They are aiming to have results with students no later than 4 August.
